Editors Note, Fall 2001
Great Moments in Literature, continued:
Two copies of this journal appear in the current holdeverything catalog, nestled in a tilt basketFine-gauge rattan, angled to keep contents visible and easy to reach. Strengthened with a wire frame and wrapped edges. $26 each.
Our loyal subscriber in Reading, PA, Darren Cooper, has passed along his 00 license plate, which is bluish on top, yellowish along the bottom, and reads, in the middle, ZYZZYVA. Many thanks.
More product placement: Poet Arthur Tulee (ZYZZYVA 49) will wear one of our all-cotton T-shirts in the new film by Sherman Alexie (ZYZZYVA 26, 46). Available in mens s, m, l, and xl. $10.
ZYZZYVA was named 21st on the Writers Digest 2001 Fiction 50 List. Our discovery of the then-unpublished F. X. Toole was cited as an example of authors whose success can be directly linked to landing a coveted few pages in a respected literary magazine.
Four of the six poets who read last March at Codys Bookstore in Berkeley, in a series organized by Poetry Flash, listed appearance in ZYZZYVA among their credits.
We have begun to publish books under the imprint ZYZZYVA FIRST BOOKS, at Creative Arts Book Company, Berkeley; many thanks to publisher Don Ellis and his wonderful staff. By the end of this year, we will have brought out four first-novels and three first-collections of poetry. Many thanks to the Creative Work Fund of the Haas Foundations for a generous seed grant to launch our first-novels project. And to the Bernard Osher Foundation for follow-on support. We are grateful for a gift to launch our poetry efforts from former Board member Rory Little and his brothers in honor of their mother, the late poet Geraldine Clinton Little.
A first-book is an awesome step for a writer, and we hope other donors will now step forward to help us continue to help fledglings fly. (No book-length manuscripts at this time, please.).
