Read this while I was supposed to be editing something, and, like many guilty pleasures, The Kangaroo Communique had me laughing out loud and also maybe considering the idea of how nice it would be to split in two and go to bed. Murakami has this effect on me whenever I read his work; he's so personal an strangely endearing.

My husband, and I just experienced our first fire season in the Sierras. We are volunteers, and only had six days in the tower, between the months of June and October. We were at Park Ridge Lookout, near Grant Grove, in Kings Canyon National Park. Reading Philip Connors' book, "Fire Season", is great for helping us in our training as fire lookouts. It's fun to read what we've experienced some of, if just to become more familiar with the language and routine of the work. We look forward to returning this summer (spring, fall, however long fire season lasts this year). But we won't be surprised if there are several smokes to report, due to dry lightning, because we're in a drought right now, and so our beautiful mountains will be ripe for burning - maybe we'll get a good amount of rain between now and then - it is still winter, technically speaking. Thank you, Mr. Connors!

Dear Oscar,

Thank you for this interview-- my morning bowl filled with vivid porridge.
The sentence, "absurdity might as well be grace" is the knife hidden in the cake.

May you walk on the field of dreams with 2012 romping beside you.

First, Antonia captured the experience of a Rhapsodomancy reading so eloquently, I am going to have to start arriving extra early and forming the line at the door or I won't get a seat! Second, Wendy's commitment is a gift to us all and I hope one day to read my own work in that sacred space.
